This great insight into eating habits and its effect on health while written in New Zealand is suitable for anyone in the world to read.

We Kiwis are literally eating ourselves to death. In the move from cooking to convenience food we have given up control of what we eat. As a result our food is heavy on sugar, fat and salt, and light on the nutrients our body needs. This is causing a hidden health crisis that will swamp our hospitals just when the baby boomers want their hip operations.

Gareth Morgan and Geoff Simmons latest book cuts straight to the bone of what ails us, and what we can really do about it.

As a Chef that spends a lot of time working to encourage and teach people the benefits of getting back to the basics and eating real food, I am pleased with the release of Gareth Morgan’s new book, “Appetite For Destruction”

The issues that Gareth and Geoff tackle in this book are complex due to a “public perception” which is or has been generated by the mass advertising from companies hawking their products on the “our products are healthy” platform.

“Appetite For Destruction” takes you through a step by step look at so many mis-conceptions that are or have been presented and talks about why they are wrong. It is a fresh look at our poor eating habits written in plain, non-technical way spelling out what I believe are the true facts.

“Appetite For Destruction” offers a well presented look at the way people think about food and also in my view, has a balanced and logical dialogue of why we as a society, need to get back to local seasonal fresh, “real foods”.

About CuisAnn

Ann Brockliss founded the company, CuisAnn in 2002. Today as it did then CuisAnn still operates from a lifestyle property on SH1 just south of Whangarei. It is a family-owned and operated business and over the last 10 years has continued to excel in the supply of Gluten free goodies to people like me.

Where I started my Gluten free knowledge – The Gluten Free Chef.

I have to thank Ann for the education she gave me back in 2002-2003 about Gluten free. I remember her telling me about her mum being Coeliac and I didn’t know what that was and she filled in the gaps for me.

I was working with CuisAnn right back in their early days, 2002-2003 to develop their first website. This gave me the time to learn all about what and why they were starting the business. Being a chef I had a natural interest in what they were doing.

It was a couple of years later and I realised that my body had a big issue with Gluten. It was Ann’s words that had stuck in my mind about what was happening that gave me the insight to remove Gluten from my diet. This was also the start of my progression to my business now as The Gluten Free Chef, thanks Ann.

They also have some great Dairy free options as well within their product range.

Their products are made in a dedicated gluten free kitchen and as people with issues with Gluten this is so important for ensuring that there is no cross-contamination and product integrity is kept pure to our needs.

A range of their products are tested annually to ensure they meet the gluten free criteria. Everything, except our sausage meat, is made on site from scratch.

In my travels as a chef here in New Zealand as well as overseas I have always loved finding unique food related places and the other week I was out with Debbie from Tastes Divine we popped into see The Meat Keeper, a Butchery located in Remuera Road.

Walking thought the door I was very impressed with the quality of the meat on display. What attracted my eye straight away was the beef. It is some of the best looking beef I have seen in a while and I soon found why.

The Meat Keeper is New Zealand’s only retail seller of Savannah Angus Beef which was originally from Scotland. I have cooked Savannahmany times with and every time that I do I am reminded why Angus is one of most famous of all beef cattle breeds for its meat. Savannah Angus Beef is renowned for its tenderness, succulence and taste and all round great eating and is served at many of the best restaurants and eateries in New Zealand and around the world.

The meat is aged for a minimum of three weeks to one month. What this length of aging does is to increase the level of tenderness and this gives the Savannah Angus beef it’s unique flavour. There are many great recipes available on the Beef & Lamb New Zealand recipe site at www.recipe.co.nz. Here are a few of my picks from Beef & Lamb New Zealand’s beef recipes.
